There’s plenty growing at the Barbican Beds this time of year!
Many of you are already picking the mint, oregano, and sage, but there is also lavender, chives, and – if you look hard enough – currants (red, black, and even white). If you are passing by and see anything ripe, you are welcome to pick it. There are also lots of bees and butterflies enjoying the plants.
Have you seen the medieval garden at the Barbican Beds? It’s on the left if you’re facing the beds. Not far from the site of the beds was St Andrew’s Priory, a monastery that existed from the thirteenth century up until the Reformation, and would very likely have had its own, self-sufficient, garden. Our medieval garden is inspired by that monastery and its garden. In it, we grow herbs, fruit, and vegetables which would have been eaten during the middle ages.
We are always keen for more volunteers to join us at the Barbican Beds to help with watering, weeding, planting, and general tidying. We meet every Sunday at 11, for about an hour. No experience needed, just enthusiasm!
