Our work with schools
Edible York works with schools, to encourage children to discover the joy of growing their own food. We provide advice, and have sometimes been able to help schools access equipment and materials to get started.
For several years, we ran the York Edible Schools programme. This aimed to:
- Increase and coordinate the number of York schools involved in growing activities on their site
- Provide schools with the knowledge, skills and understanding about the benefits of growing and eating your own fruit and veg
- Facilitate a partnership approach, based on mutual support between schools and supporting organisations.
The programme operates informally now, but you might find the York Edible Schools booklet useful.
Several schools also joined in with our patchwork orchard programme, which distributed £5,000 worth of fruit trees around the city, meaning several schools are enjoying fresh fruit on-site for years to come.
More recently, we have been working with schools through our Abundance programme, delivering fresh fruit to schools, and in 2026 we have been running a York schools pumpkin growing competition.
